Bus safety legislation in Victoria is made up of several Acts and Regulations. These are:

Public Transport Competition Act 1995
Public Transport Competition Regulations 1999
Transport Act 1983
Transport (Passenger Vehicles) Regulations 2005

Overview

The key elements of the Public Transport Competition Act 1995 relating to safety are:

If you are operating bus services within Victoria, you must be accredited by PTSV
Accreditation will be based on your suitability to operate the service for which you have applied for accreditation, the safety of passengers and the public, and your vehicles and equipment.

Amendments

There have been some recent amendments to the Public Transport Competition Act 1995. PTSV has developed a summary table of amendments to assist bus operators in understanding the changes. The table can be downloaded from the tools and downloads section on this page.

Bus safety legislative reform

Existing bus safety legislation is currently undergoing review by the Department of Transport (in consultation with PTSV). The following table will be updated as information becomes available.

7 April 2009				The Bus Safety Bill received royal assent and is now the Bus Safety Act 2009 (Vic). The Act will become fully operational on 31 December 2010 and draft regulations are currently being prepared. Use the link provided in the 'tools and downloads' section of this page to view the document.

3 December 2008				The Bus Safety Bill 2008 was introduced into Parliament for debate in early 2009.

14 May 2008				The Department of Transport releases the discussion paper 'Improving Bus Safety in Victoria' for public comment.
