Improving safety culture

The term ‘safety culture’ is an important one for the rail and bus industries. By developing an organisational culture that supports the safety management systems, operators can derive many benefits, including:

  • decrease in safety-related incidents
  • increased morale and productivity of workers
  • a safety management system that is fully integrated into organisational life

PTSV promotes and develops programmes for improving safety culture in rail and bus organisations.

Training

One of PTSV's functions as a safety regulator is to promote education and training. We do this by:
  • devising, in cooperation with other organisations, courses in public transport safety
  • approving and facilitating courses in public transport safety, and
  • initiating and promoting events such as conferences and information.

Railway crossing safety

PTSV works with the Department of Transport and accredited rail operators to improve railway crossing safety. PTSV's role includes:

  • monitoring and reporting on incidents at railway crossings
  • conducting safety audits on rail operators’ safety management systems
  • taking a lead role in the camera study trials at two high-traffic railway crossings.
