This page provides information for rail operators who need to ensure that their staff have the skills and knowledge to work around railway tracks safely. Track Safety Awareness Training is competency based learning for members of the Victorian Rail Industry. It ensures rail safety workers have the skills and knowledge to work around railway tracks safely.
Who conducts the training?
Rail operators conduct the training. They tailor the training to their specific operations.
Do I need to do the training?
If you are going to be undertaking any work around or on railway tracks, then you will most likely require some form of track safety awareness training. The level required may vary depending on the kind of work you will be doing, the location and the company you will be working for.
You should check with your employer about track safety training.
How do I go about getting the training?
Accredited rail operators each have their own procedures for track safety awareness. If you are employed by, or are providing contracting services for an accredited rail operator, you should speak with them about track safety awareness training.
Why do I need it?
An accredited rail operator needs to demonstrate that they can manage the risks associated with operating or managing rolling stock or railway infrastructure. Providing track safety awareness training is one way in which they can manage their risks and demonstrate to the safety regulator that they are managing their risks. PTSV may, in an audit or compliance inspection, ask to see records of an operator’s track safety awareness training. This is to check if the operator is providing the appropriate level of training and instruction.
Who can I contact for more information?

Guideline
The Guideline for Track Safety Awareness training (see 'tools and downloads' section on this page) was developed by representatives from the rail industry, training organisations and unions.
The Guideline is divided into two parts:
- integrating Track Safety Awareness Training into an organisation’s Safety Management System, and
- an “Assessment Bank” to assist training providers with designing training and assessment tools to comply with nationally accredited training rules.
