The Safety Director, through PTSV, administers rail and bus safety legislation in Victoria.
Rail safety legislation
Rail safety legislation in Victoria places certain obligations on rail (tram and train) operators. The primary pieces of legislation are the Rail Safety Act 2006, Rail Safety Regulations 2006 and the Transport Act 1983.
Bus safety legislation
Bus safety legislation applying to bus operators in Victoria refers primarily to a system of accreditation of operators under the Public Transport Competition Act 1995 and Public Transport Competition Regulations 1999.

As employees of the Department of Transport, the Safety Director's staff have responsibilities under law, including adherence to the:
