Rail and bus operators have legal responsibilities for worker health and fitness. Rail and bus industry workers also have responsibilities for their own health and fitness when undertaking their work.


Rail industry

For the rail industry, the obligations fall into the following four categories:

  • Alcohol and drug controls
  • Health assessments of rail safety workers
  • Fatigue management
  • Competency of workers

Bus industry

For the bus industry, bus drivers need to be fit for duty. As in the rail industry, there are medical standards applicable to bus drivers, however these standards are administered through the bus driver licensing body, the Victorian Taxi Directorate.
